As 2017 gets into full swing lots of productive things are happening musically for
me. Below are recent reviews and articles, upcoming concerts, a free music
video, and free audio samples. I hope you enjoy and thanks for reading.
New Review for Labyrinth
Though it’s been 8 years since the official release of Labyrinth (my album for
jazz quintet and chamber orchestra) a review was published last month in
the weekend version of the Australian by John McBeath. Labyrinth features
Ben Monder-gtrs, Jacob Sacks-pno, Thomas Morgan-bass, and Tyshawn
Sorey-drums. Here’s a free sample of the album and below that is the
Article in the Sacramento Bee:
Earlier this week I was featured in ‘The Sacramento Bee’. The article was about the
evolving Jazz and new music scene in the Sacramento area. The article includes
interviews from myself and key local musicians that have helped to create a scene
here over the years. Thanks Marcus Crowder for this interesting read.

Chamber Jazz Review:
My current release ‘Chamber Jazz’ featuring Kevin Hays-pno, Gianluca Renzi-bass
and Ari Hoenig-drums received another review last week. This time from an
unexpected source but I’ll take it nonetheless. As the saying goes ‘all publicity is
Sacramento Jazz Co – Op:
This Monday February 20th I will present music
from ‘ChamberJazz’ as part of a new concert
series in Sacramento for the Sacramento
Jazz Co-Op. They have a beautiful concert
space with a 9 ft grand piano and an eloquently
lit ballroom atmosphere ideal for listening to
jazz. The band will feature Joe Gilman-piano.
George Ban Weiss-bass and Time Metz-drums.
This should be a fantastic evening. If interested in
coming you can reserve tix here:
Tuesday Nights Loops:
I’ve now started a duo residency with Davis drummer Jim Frink at the ‘Root of
Happiness-Kava Bar’ in downtown Davis. The music is somewhat unusual in
that all pieces employ the use of a looper pedal to layer different woodwind
instruments, which both the drums and I then improvise around. We start at
8pm Tuesdays and there is also a band that plays an opening Jazz set from
7pm. Join us for some Kava and hypnotic trance-jazz.
UC Davis Jazz Composers concert:
Another concert that might interest some of you is on March 7th in the beautiful
Pitzer Hall at UC Davis Campus. This concert will feature a series of original
jazz compositions written and orchestrated over the course of this school quarter.
It is the culmination of the Jazz Composition course I’ve been running at UC
Davis for the past few years. It starts at 4pm.
Here is a video I haven’t yet touted. It’s from the studio recording for ECMish
from ‘Chamber Jazz’. I hope you enjoy. ECMish video:
Here is a link to a theme I wrote initially for a film but alas it wasn’t used, due
to “tax reasons”. The good news is it will be included in a release I’m working on
of cinematic style music that can serve as a portfolio for future work scoring
Local Sacramento pianist Joe Gilman and I will release a new duo album for piano,
saxophones, and synthesizer. Here’s a sneak peak of some raw (unmixed) takes.
Thanks again for reading! See you next month.
Here’s what’s happening in my little musical universe this new year.
New Reviews for Chamber Jazz:
‘Chamber Jazz’ - my new release featuring Ari Hoenig, Kevin Hays and Gianluca Renzi, received a nice review in Downbeat magazine (February edition). Some other great Cds are reviewed in this edition and there are also many interesting articles, including one on modern recording techniques for big band. So check it out!
‘Chamber Jazz’ was also recently reviewed on the ‘sea of tranquility’ website. Here is the link for those interested in a read.
There will also be a review of Chamber Jazz in the February 17th Sacramento Bee Newspaper. I believe it will be part of an article about a new local concert series run by the Sacramento Jazz Co-op.
There’s a new video from the recording session for ‘Chamber Jazz’ featuring Kevin Hays, Ari Hoenig and
Gianluca Renzi up on Youtube:
On Jan 29th I’ll make my SF JAZZ debut presenting the music from ‘Timeout’ by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The project is lead by pianist Joe Gilman who is an outstanding musician and used to run the Brubeck Institute and was Bobby Hutcherson’s pianist for many years, before his recent passing.
I remember listening to my Dad’s vinyl copy of this record as a kid. This band with Paul Desmond on alto was among his favorite. If you’re in San Francisco check out this show! It will be an great ‘time’ J

My monthly news is below.
Releasing officially Oct 28th, my new offering ‘Chamber Jazz’ is now starting to
generate love from the Jazz media and radio folk. Here are some interesting
complimentary quotes it has received thus far.
….“swings like mad from start to finish” … All About Jazz
….“a must hear”…. Sounds of Timeless Jazz
….“Good Stuff”…. Jazz Weekly
and my favorite quote is from AXS.com who wrote,
….“escapism without going too far off the deep end”…. LOL!
Chamber Jazz was also the featured album on the ‘Excellence in Jazz Playlist’
-NPR-Capitol Public Radio show.
Below are links to a new video of the recording session for ‘Thread’ from
Chamber Jazz, an All About Jazz review of the album, and the episode of
‘Excellence in Jazz’ on NPR that featured the album. If you’d like to

New Review from All About Jazz:
In the next few weeks I’ve some fun concerts for those on the West Coast. Firstly,
this weekend (Nov 26th) I’ll make my debut at the new Blue Note Jazz Club in
Ensemble concert and live recording in the beautiful new Pitzer Concert Hall at UC
Davis. The following weekend (Dec 2nd and 3rd) I’m doing a two-night residency at
a very classy new Jazz venue in downtown San Francisco called Black Cat. Then
I’m taking my family to Australia (via Hawaii) to have a beer with Santa on the
beach. Shortly after I get back I’m playing at SF Jazz for pianist Joe Gilman’s
‘Time Out Project’, which is a tribute to Dave Brubecks 1959 classic album.
And in February, I will lead a show for the Sacramento Jazz Coop at the Clara
Auditorium in Sacramento. For those interested here’s a link to the upcoming
In The Studio:
The most recent addition to MMR-Manricks Music Records, which I’m very
excited about, is the ‘new’ release by German pianist and composer Werner
Klausnitzer. It’s entitled ‘Colors Of Sameness’, which features Tyshawn Sorey
on drums, myself on alto sax and Werner on piano. The album presents some
groundbreaking compositions by Werner, which display his phenomenological
approach to music. I hadn’t ever heard or performed music like this before and
it’s a profound work IMO. Look for a sample on my bandcamp page and on
the 'in the studio' page on my website in the next few weeks.
Another project out soon is a duo album of original material featuring
myself on saxophones and synthesizer with Sacramento virtuoso pianist
Joe Gilman. Here is a new sample from that project:
Bay area bassist Giulio Cetto is releasing his debut album as a leader ‘Anthem
for a New America’. The mixing mastering process is about to begin on that but
in the meantime you can get a taste here:
Nth Californian drummer Jim Frink and I are about to record a new project
incorporating woodwinds, looper pedal, drums, synthesizer and sound effects.
We perform a residency in Davis California every 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the
month at The Root of Happiness. Come check it out or look for some audio
samples of that project in late December.
And finally ‘Cinematik’, my project for film and picture music, is taking shape.
There is a mix of underscore, theme song, and leitmotif based suites performed
on live woodwinds, strings and rhythm section, mixed with the logic pro sound
bank. Here are some samples for Cinematik:
Free audio samples of these projects can be found on my bandcamp page and
in the studio page on my website. And, if you like what you hear you can
pre-order (or contribute to a project) there also.
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoy the music and hope to see you somewhere
Lots of exciting things happening these next few months. Below is a short
newsletter-style update of current musical projects, links to free music and

New Release - ‘Chamber Jazz’
First off, I’m proud to announce the official release of my new ‘album’ Chamber
Jazz. The album has 10 tracks (8 originals and 2 covers) and features some of the
smoothest crème de la crème of the New York Jazz scene. Here is a link to the
EPK interview discussing the project.
Here's a recent review of 'Chamber Jazz' among rather reputable company

Recently I started a Bandcamp web page showcasing full tracks from my albums,
music videos, interviews, and a streaming subscription option.
Full track samples from Chamber Jazz and Labyrinth (my 2009 release featuring
Ben Monder, Jacob Sacks,Thomas Morgan, Tyshawn Sorey and chamber orchestra)
are available there. There are previously unreleased tracks available from
Labyrinth too (only on Bandcamp). You will also find full-track (ad-free) videos
from the studio recording of Chamber Jazz and 4 upcoming releases in the next
few months (duo project with pianist Joe Gilman, Guilio Cetto Quartet, Cinematic
-Original Music for Picture-, and another duo project with drummer Jim Frink
utilizing electronics and looper).
Bandcamp is one of the best ways to directly support the artist as they take very
little percentage any sales. I feel it’s also one of the best ways to connect with
the music and stay up to date on different projects as they evolve. Subscribers
to my page receive unlimited ad-free streaming to all music released on MMR
(Manricks Music Records), ad-free videos of interviews, studio recordings,
and live gigs, access to sheet music (upon request), 15% off merch
(CDs, Vinyl, etc) and more… Check it out here
I recently made several updates to my website (jacammanricks.com). There are
5 new videos from the studio recording of Chamber Jazz and interviews about
the project on the Watch page. There is a new Scoring to Picture page where
you can find sample tracks from music I’ve been writing for film recently.
There is a new Education page with free composition and assignment
downloads. Throughout the site I’ve uploaded many new audio samples from
Chamber Jazz too. Go here to check it out:
In the Studio and Upcoming Releases
Over the past few years I’ve been building a recording studio to create an
environment where I can produce music in a more refined and expedient way.
With high-end microphones, a beautiful grand piano, an isolation booth,
extensive acoustic treatment, and cutting edge software, I’m able to
create extremely high quality audio tracks here. Currently there are four
projects that have been recorded here and are soon to be released.
Duo Project with pianist Joe Gilman
The album will feature a mix of original material drawing influence from
jazz standards and post contemporary modern jazz. Included in the
repertoire are angular contra-facts on American song book tunes and
originals that are more sound-scape ambient music than straight ahead
Jazz. Here is a sample ruff-mix.
Terra Two Part
Giulio Cetto Quartet
SF based bassist Giulio Cetto will release a compilation of well thought
out and moving original compositions. The band features Giulio on bass,
Parker Grant on piano, Mike Quigg on drums and yours truly on
saxophones. Here is a sample of a ruff mix:
Anthem For a New America
This is an accumulation of music I’ve been writing and recording for picture
over the past year or 2. There is a mix of underscore, theme song, and
leitmotif based suites performed on live woodwinds, strings, piano, drums,
mixed with the logic pro sound bank. Here's a sample:

Duo Project with Drummer Jim Frink (Music Shop)
This project evolved out of Tuesday night residency where we begun
experimenting looping woodwinds and improvising on top of them.
In the studio we will combine electronic effects and ambient noise to
create a modern experimental hypnotic trance-like style.
